Documentaries created at Medill under the guidance of Professor Brent E. Huffman have gone on to win Student Academy Awards, National College Emmys, Society of Professional Journalists Awards, Hearst Journalism Awards, Press Association Awards and have premiered at major film festivals like Cannes, American Documentary Film Festival, Tribeca, etc.
These student films have also premiered nationally on PBS and in online outlets like The Atlantic, Time, Business Insider, The Today Show, National Geographic, Fusion, Al Jazeera, WBEZ, etc.
Documentary alums work as directors, producers, editors, and cinematographers at prestigious outlets like VICE, The Discovery Channel, The New York Times, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, The Today Show, The Atlantic, TIME, CNN Films, The Ford Foundation, PBS Newshour, Kartemquin, HBO Docs, The Washington Post, The Seattle Times, Al Jazeera, The Today Show, etc.
Finding Yingying, by Medill documentary student Jiayan “Jenny” Shi, was nominated for the Outstanding Investigative Documentary at the 42nd News & Doc Primetime Emmy and won a Chinese Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Documentary category. Finding Yingying also won the Breakthrough Voice Jury Award at the 33rd SXSW Film Festival among many other honors and awards. The documentary can be viewed on Paramount+.
Medill documentary "Everything is Fine" will have its east coast premiere at the prestigious Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival and Symposium in Washington, DC.
Medill documentary student Ankita M. Kumar wins top honors from multiple film festivals for her documentary "Far From Home." The documentary was recently nominated for the prestigious Japan Prize by NHK.
Six Medill student documentaries premiere at the prestigious Academy Award qualifying American Documentary Film Festival in Palm Springs every year.
